Abstract

The present and future trends in the applied research and industrial production of bioethanol are reviewed. The production is expected to rise quickly in the near future due to the biofuel strategy of the EU. Bacteria and yeast commonly used in the production development of specific microbes that could be useful for its large-scale production from biomass are described. The most popular substrates and current technologies in modern bioethanol plants are discussed.
